IRON WOMAN:
Why iron matters in motherhood
A clinical masterclass for health professionals working with mothers.
If you work with mothers — from preconception, through pregnancy, across the postpartum years and into midlife — this masterclass will sharpen how you assess, interpret, and support iron status in practice.

Hi, I'm Dr Oscar Serrallach
Maternal health specialist, with a focus on integrative and functional medicine, and postnatal wellbeing.
Most of the mothers we care for at my clinic are exhausted, foggy, flat, overwhelmed — often years after pregnancy and birth.
One of my biggest pet peeves is the frequency with which, before finding our offices, women are reassured that their iron is “only slightly low”, “borderline”, or “not low enough” — or even worse, “you’re only slightly anaemic”.
Clinically, that framing is deeply misleading for women.
One very important fact that is still poorly understood is this:Iron deficiency is not a late finding — anaemia is.
By the time anaemia appears, iron-dependent systems have often been under strain for a long time.
What’s also often missed is that modern women have significantly higher iron requirements than women did in the past — for reasons that are rarely discussed in medical training, and which are genuinely eye-opening when understood.
In this free masterclass, I'm taking a focused, clinically grounded deep dive into iron — not as a single nutrient, but as a central driver of maternal capacity, recovery, and resilience across the long arc of motherhood.
This masterclass is designed specifically for health practitioners working with mothers, including midwives, GPs, obstetric-adjacent clinicians, nurses, and allied health professionals.
We will explore:
-
Why iron sits upstream of energy, mood, cognition, sleep, and recovery
-
The true iron cost of pregnancy — and why its effects often extend for years
-
Why modern women’s iron requirements are higher than in previous generations
-
Iron deficiency without anaemia, and why it still matters clinically
-
Hepcidin, inflammation, and why some mothers cannot absorb iron effectively
-
Oral vs IV iron: absorption, tolerability, and clinical decision-making
-
Interpreting ferritin and iron studies with greater nuance
-
When correcting iron alone can meaningfully shift a mother’s trajectory
This is a live, practical, evidence-informed clinical session grounded in maternal physiology.
All of your questions around iron — assessment, interpretation, and treatment — are welcome.
There will be time for a Q&A at the end of the masterclass.
